Okay, so how long has the phenomenom of the pre-emptive hold been in existence, and why is it that those responsible have not been dragged through the streets by howling mobs? Twice today I answered the phone only to be greeted by a recording telling me that “they” have an important call for me but all of their operators are busy, so could I please wai—

Seriously, if it’s important, “they” could do me the courtesy of having an actual human being make the call.

But I still think it's better than the dead air you get with those annyoing teledialers that only transfer the call (eventually) to a person after you pick up the bleedin' phone.

I can almost admire the audacity it must require to think, Let’s dial up people and ask them to please hold! I mean, I can barely stand being put on hold when I’m the party who intitiated the call.

and they always do it with blocked phone numbers, so you can't retaliate by calling *them* and sticking some poor schmuck on hold. *g*
