The Laughing Academy
A Life of Noisy Desperation
A Brief Recap
23rd-Sep-2005 12:55 pm
Steeplechase
Thurs., Sept. 15: Terry Pratchett Q&A/signing at the Lincoln Center Barnes & Noble. Had him sign THUD!, asked (aping his delivery of the question during the Q&A) “What’s it like working with Neil Gaiiiimannn?” Answer: “Mostly he worked with me.” Next time, must thank him for the scene in Wee Free Men in which Miss Tick explodes the cliché of “When You Wish upon a Star.”

Sun., Sept. 18: Angels on the Bowery Benefit for CBGB at CB’s 313 Gallery. Highlight was Neil Gaiman’s reading of a short story written for the occasion, “How to Talk to Girls at Parties,” though I also enjoyed Kyle Baker’s segment a lot. Wore my new black Biche de Bere panels over a black tube bra (stuck on with double-sided tape) and my pleated black silk Club Monaco skirt, because when else am I going to pull off an outfit like that?

Mon., Sept. 19: Impromptu pizza outing with co-workers and early dismissal from work due to loss of a generator. Announcements were largely unintelligible and more or less ignored by everyone, who left on their own initiative. (Synopsis: “Everything is fine, no need to evacuate.” “Shades of 9/11; bugger that.”)

Tues., Sept. 20: Neil Gaiman reading/Q&A/signing at the Union Square Barnes & Noble. Arrived during reading because day shift currently runs until 6 p.m. Bought a copy of Anansi Boys, began reading in line, had it signed (along with Mr. Punch and The Wolves in the Walls) around 11:45, finished book on L train shuttle bus during trip home. Made Neil feel very happy and useful by telling him he was instrumental in starting me on Chesterton, James Branch Cabell, and Gene Wolfe. Neil recommended the works of Thorne Smith (who is mentioned in the front matter of Anansi Boys), particularly Rain in the Doorway, which he said is Gene Wolfe’s favorite.

Thurs., Sept. 22: Failed to pick up new contacts from doctor’s office. Will try again after I win the game of phone-tag I am currently playing with the woman who handles lens orders.

Hello sister! I was just in the neighborhood (so to speak) and thought I'd say 'Hi!', so....

Hi!

Cheers, Pecos
